Question:

My child is 3 1/2 months old, and he regularly has, what seem to be, dreams when he sleeps. They cause him to sometimes scream or laugh out loud in his sleep. What could he possibly be dreaming about?

Answer:

The screams or laughs during sleep are a response to an immature sleep center. They probably occur only once or twice during the time your child is coming out of a deep sleep into a light sleep. We don't really know what they are thinking during these transitions, but our guess is that its a vague pre-verbal feeling of fear or some other reaction to the dream going on at the time.

The time frame for girls to develop an adult sleep pattern is usually between 6 to 8 weeks. For boys, it's usually 3 and 4 months, but could go on for another month or two depending on his rate of development. However, it's nothing to worry about, and you will see those expressions diminish and fade as his adult sleeping pattern takes over.
